The declassification of all the files from the pontificate of Pius XII from the Vatican Secret Archives in 2003 and 2006 made it possible for all of the around 6,500 reports that Eugenio Pacelli, the future Pius XII, sent in his role as nuncio from Germany to Rome between 1917 and 1929 to be made available to science and the public in a critical online edition. Based on a cooperation between the Department for Medieval and Modern Church History at the University of Münster, the German Historical Institute in Rome and the Vatican Secret Archive, Pacelli’s reports, including all attachments, are being published as part of a long-term project in planning and execution that is being funded by the German Research Foundation, which are being critically edited and commented. These reports are being published by the year in regular sequences.
