Call for Papers: First Anglo-German Doctoral Seminar in Early Modern Religious History

The Verein für Reformationsgeschichte (Society for Reformation History) and the German Historical Institute London (GHIL) are pleased to announce the first Anglo-German Doctoral Seminar in Early Modern Religious History.

Venue: German Historical Institute London

Date: 3-5 September 2018

Organizers: Bridget Heal (St Andrews), Thomas Kaufmann (Göttingen), Matthias Pohlig (Münster), and Michael Schaich (GHIL). With participation from Anselm Schubert (Erlangen), Alexandra Walsham (Cambridge), Jonathan Willis (Birmingham), and Markus Wriedt (Frankfurt).

The seminar will bring together junior scholars from Germany and the UK / Republic of Ireland. We plan to invite up to eight doctoral students from each region. The organizers welcome proposals on any aspect of the early modern religious history of the Holy Roman Empire, Britain or Ireland. Doctoral students working in related fields and disciplines – for example art history and literary studies – are encouraged to apply, as are students working on comparative projects. The discussions will be based on English-language papers submitted four weeks in advance, and the seminar will be conducted in English. The organizers will cover travel and lodging expenses.

We are now accepting applications from doctoral students whose dissertations are at an advanced stage. Applications should include:

  1. dissertation project description (max. 1000 words),
  2. provisional table of contents, indicating which chapters have been completed (max. 2 pages),
  3. curriculum vitae (max. 2 pages),
  4. letter of reference from the major dissertation advisor (commenting on progress toward completion).

German-speaking applicants may submit their materials in German; English-speaking applicants in English.

The first three documents should be combined in a single PDF file and emailed to Bridget Heal at bmh6(at) by 25th June 2018. Letters of reference should be emailed (preferably in PDF format) directly by the supervisor by the same date.
