One Research Assistant

Part-time (10 hours per week) to a fixed-term post for 12 months, based in London WC1A 2NJ starting in January 2021

The position involves researching and designing an exhibition for the three-year International Standing Working Group (ISWG) Medialization and Empowerment led by the GHIL. The ISWG forms part of the international research project “Knowledge Unbound: Internationalization, Networking, Innovation in and by the Max Weber Stiftung.” It is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The Working Group investigates the ways feminist ideas circulated in twentieth-century mass media, and how media shaped society and activism. These questions are explored in a global context, involving partners at research institutions in Britain, Germany, India, and beyond.

The research assistant will:

  • organize and design an exhibition on the topic of “Feminism and the Media” that will be displayed at venues in the UK, Germany and India
  • plan and co-ordinate the exhibition display, including launch events
  • collect and create exhibition materials and information
  • co-ordinate the promotion of the exhibition
  • be resident in the UK, and travel to some events in India and Germany

We are looking for candidates who:

  • have completed graduate studies in the humanities, ideally with expertise in the field of art history, gender history or media history
  • have experience organizing exhibitions and/or similar events
  • have experience in public engagement and promoting academic events
  • have an excellent command of written and spoken English, and a good reading knowledge of German
  • have good organizational skills
  • are team-players and willing to work alongside the International Standing Working Group to develop its international presence.

The salary, which is based on the German Embassy’s pay scheme, is £999 per month (£1038.75 after a six-month probation period). Andre Tummernicht (tummernicht(ghi)ghil.ac.uk) can answer any questions relating to salary and support for families.
