Dr. Patrick Franke

There are several points connecting Mullā ʿAlī al-Qārī to Jalāl ad-Dīn al-Suyūṭī: In many of his writings, he mentions him as his indirect teacher, like him he understood himself primarily as a Hadith scholar, he maintained a similar lifestyle, and as the author of over 120 texts, many of them treatises discussing particular questions, had a similar production profile. Furthermore, al-Qārī, like al-Suyūṭī, claimed the status of a renovator (mujaddid), formulationg this claim in a similar way. In contrast to him, however, he considered himself as a Ḥanafī restorer of religion. And this pronounced Ḥanafī identity also made him an antipode of al-Suyūṭī, who did not feel so bound to a specific Madhhab, but seems to have aligned himself rather with Ashʿarī doctrines. The contrast between the two is particularly evident in their dealing with the issue of the Prophet's parents, to which al-Suyūṭī devoted six treatises, which later were refuted by al-Qārī from a strict Ḥanafī/Maturīdī perspective. So is it right to describe al-Qārī as a Ḥanafī version of al-Suyūṭī? The lecture aims to show that this description is largely accurate, but that al-Qārī cannot be completely reduced to it, because he was more ambitious in his textual composition style than al-Suyūṭī.

Dr. Patrick Franke is full professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Bamberg. Among his research focuses are Islamic conceptual history, Islamic doxography and early modern history of Mecca. He has several publications on ʿAlī al-Qārī, and his habilitation thesis on him, submitted to the University of Halle in 2007, has been uploaded to archive.org. Since 2013, Franke is engaged in building up the Bamberger Islam-Enzyklopädie (BIE), a novel online reference work on the history of Islam integrated in German Wikipedia.
