Damit beschäftige ich mich:
I am researching intellectual influences of legal reform in the Renaissance Grand Duchy of Lithuania, particularly, the ways this Renaissance state punished intentional homicide. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania underwent a thorough legal codification in the 16th century and simultaneously appropriating ideas shaped by humanism and religious reformation.
Was reizt mich an meinem Forschungsfeld?
I am fascinated by the social mechanisms developed to halt violence in pre-modern settings. While local communities often developed ritualistic means to halt the vicious cycle of revenge, the growing influence of the state offered a legalistic alternative. Interplay of customs and law leads to culture specific alternatives of conflict resolution.
Was ist die größte Herausforderung meiner Forschung?
The current project raises a pertinent question: was the letter of the law upheld in everyday practice? While the historical consensus informs of creative deviations from the law and variety of loopholes the accused made good use of, cases where strict laws were carried out to their full extent are relatively rare. Due to the state of the archives describing legal proceedings from half a millennium ago, one is forced to concede that some things are nearly unknowable.
