German Historical Institute London


For over four decades, the German Historical Institute London has been an integral part of the German–British academic landscape and a popular contact point for researchers from all over the world. The Institute promotes historical research in the United Kingdom and Germany in the fields of the comparative history of Britain and Germany, the colonial and global history of the British Empire and the Commonwealth, and the history of British–German relations. The India Research Programme of the GHI London promotes and maintains close contacts with humanities scholars from South Asia. The Institute has a joint visiting professorship with the London School of Economics funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation.

British and Irish history from the early Middle Ages to recent contemporary history; history of British–German relations and comparative European history; history of the British Empire and Commonwealth; colonial and global history; Indian history (India Research Programme); intellectual history; history of medialization; history of gender and society


The library of the DHI London contains approximately 95,000 volumes on German history and the history of German–British relations.
