Nazir Sabir. Alpinism worldwide – Mountains and Society – Mountaineering in Pakistan: A Personal Challange and its Symbolic Impact

Abstract:
The greatness of mountains is always inspiring also the people living around and in many religions they have a magnificent role. Also mountaineering may strengthen the relationship of the whole country with its mountains. Similar it was in the region of the Alpes, where Luis Trenker climbed many mountains and talked about what he could discover. In Lebanon the mountains played an important role for the history of the country. In our two days seminary Alpinism worldwide – Mountains and Society we will discover the variety of mountains and mountaineering. During the opening event Nazir Sabir will share stories about the Hunza Valley, his birth place, how the mountains around inspired him. He will depict his entrance into climbing scene, talk about highlights and some unique stories from his 28 year climbing pursuits. Additionally there will be insight in the history of mountaineering in Karakoram during the last decades and its evolution.

Bio:
Nazir Sabir is a Pakistani mountaineer. He was born in Hunza in the northern part of Pakistan. He is the first from Pakistan to have climbed Everest on the 17th  of May, 2000. He also reached four of the five 8000 m peaks in Pakistan, including the world's second highest mountain K2 in 1981, Gasherbrum II 8035m, Broad Peak 8050m in 1982, and Gasherbrum I 8068m in 1992.
