Residential Doctoral Fellowships 2024-25 (OI Beirut)

Bewerbungsschluss: 01.05.2024

The Orient-Institut Beirut (OIB) awards a number of visiting fellowships normally lasting 7-10 months beginning on 1 September 2024 or shortly thereafter, specifically designed for doctoral candidates engaged in outstanding research projects in the humanities and social sciences. We invite applications across disciplines, time periods, and geographic coverage outlined in our mission statement. Proposals are encouraged to articulate the contemporary stakes of the research project, encompassing historiographical, cultural, religious and/or political dimensions.

Applicants must hold a post-graduate degree (Master, Diplom, Magister etc.). It is essential for applicants to demonstrate how their projects will benefit from an extended stay in the region and contribute to the institute’s overall research environment.

Proficiency in written and oral English, as well as all languages relevant to the research project, is expected. Priority will be given to candidates with demonstrated oral proficiency in German. Visiting fellows are expected to actively engage in the OIB’s research community, attend weekly colloquia, and participate in relevant scholarly activities and events. Fellows are also required to present their work at least once, and write a research report at the end of their OIB tenure.

Fellowships include a monthly stipend of currently 1,200 Euros. A one-time travel allowance of 600 Euros towards a return flight to Beirut, booked after acceptance of our offer, is available. Depending on availability, the OIB may provide visiting fellows with office space. The OIB will not provide funding for preliminary research, language courses, or the composition and revision of book manuscripts.

Applications must include:

 1.    A brief cover letter indicating the preferred duration of the fellowship
2.    Curriculum vitae
3.    Research proposal / project description (max. 2,000 words)
4.    At least one letter of recommendation

The application package should be submitted as a single PDF file (excluding letters of recommendation, which should be submitted directly by the referee) to bewerbungen(at)orient-institut.org. Applicants may write in either English or German; we recommend that they use the language in which they are most proficient. The deadline for applications is 1 May 2024. Interviews will be conducted via video call later that month.
